Despite its use in Peru, under EU/UK Law, some products are classed as "Novel Foods" and this includes Algarroba, and as such must not be sold for HUMAN consumption. The Novel Foods Act of 1997 was originally devised to protect consumers from genetically modified foods. Since then, genetically modified foods have been removed from the Novel Foods List, but the law still exists and means that any food not previously proved to be substantially marketed in the EU before 15th May 1997 may not be marketed as a food. These products are only available for animal use or for arts and crafts.
