Rooibos is a caffeine-free, healthy alternative to black tea. It produces a full-bodied infusion, packed with antioxidants. Rooibos means 'red bush' in Afrikaans. Rooibos only grows in a small area 250 km north of Cape Town in the rugged Cedarberg area and no alternative source of this unique product is available anywhere in the world. The indigenous shrub-like Rooibos plant has thin, needle-like leaves of about 10 mm in length which are green when harvested in summer, but turn a beautiful dark red during fermentation. Traditionally, the green leaves and stems of the plant are crushed and “fermented” overnight before being spread out to dry in the African sun. The fermentation step is an oxidation process caused by enzymes and chemicals naturally present in the plant which produce the typical red colour.
